Hungry Gayze is an Orlando four piece that features male and female vox as well as one Rich Evans from the omnipotent, Florida’s Dying label. This is only the fourth single on the Total Punk imprint (one of two new subsidiaries of Florida’s Dying)…so you collectors out there might want to jump on that bandwagon now to ensure getting in on the action early on.
“Roadkill” starts off the single with grooving bass and simple drums with those nasally chanty gang vocals (think Davilla 666 minus the Spanish). The main chunk of this song is what must be a keyboard or a guitar being completely manipulated to its breaking point. Swinging its pitch in and out sorta like someone is turning a radio dial a bunch. Pretty righteous. Every now and again you get a keyboard line that is pure casio perfection for added measure (think what most of those French bands are using for their quirky keyboard lines). And the song’s the perfect length, just under 2 minutes (could we expect anything less from a label called Total Punk?). Get in, get out.
“Pins and Needles” is another sub 2 minute garage rock raver. Simple guitar riffage, with some nice guitar flourishes and female vox out front. The chorus is simply punk, “Pins and Needles and Pins and Needles” etc. Really a pretty straightforward but completely honest punk song. “8th Grade Haircut” saunters into Mike Sniper territory. Slow, pulsing. Creepy vocals that are actually pretty clean (not too many effects on em). This is a really promising 7” that will hopefully prime us for another 7” or maybe if we’re lucky enough an LP!
